Abstract. The green spear quality and the yield structure were worse with the off-season harvest in summer and autumn. Hastened or delayed traditional spring harvest time had no significant effect on the spear quality. The cultivars ‘Backlim’ and ‘Gynlim’ were characterised by different suitability for timing the asparagus production.

Summary
Investigations were undertaken to determine the effect of different harvest time on quality of asparagus spears. Plastic covers were applied to force the harvest, and during winter the soil was covered with a layer of pine bark to prolong the harvest season by delaying its start. The mother stalk method and a twice-a-year harvest as well as harvest in July were also used to extend the harvest period off the traditional season. Two all-male cultivars were included in the experiment: ‘Gynlim’, the early one; and ‘Backlim’, the late one. This paper presents results from the period of six years of harvest.
The spear quality in the off-season production was lower than in the traditional spring harvest. The highest mean spear weight was obtained with the traditional, hastened, delayed and twice-a-year harvesting as well as in cultivar ‘Gynlim’ with prolonged harvesting. The lowest mean spear weight was obtained when the harvest was forced in July as well as in cultivar ‘Backlim’ with the one prolonged till mid-July. The yield structure due to spear quality was the worst with the harvest in July as well as with the one prolonged till mid-July. It was proved that asparagus varieties showed different suitability for timing production.
